CCTV FOLLIES 1.2 JAPAN IN THE NEWS
The only news today is foreign and it's all bad -China's domestic news is nothing but platitudes and propaganda, consisting of re-runs of Xi's greatest hits and reactions to his "epic" New Year speech
The earthquake in Ishikawa, Japan continues to get top coverage in the foreign news slot, with numerous reports from NHK and CCTV, followed by news of a fiery jet crash in Tokyo.
The earthquake in the Noto region was reportedly 7.6 magnitude on the Japanese scale with a death toll of 48 at the time of broadcast.

The pro-Kremlin footage is short and lacklustre today, but it’s not clear if this reflects a CCTV editorial shift (unlikely) or just patchy editing job.
Ukraine footage is always lacklustre, so today’s shots from Ukraine side are the usual.
Lee Jae-myung, South Korea’s opposition leader, is stabbed on the street in Busan.
It is unusual for CCTV to show graphic pictures of a leader in an awkward situation, let alone under attack, although the rules are looser for foriegn leaders and similar coverage could be seen when Japan’s Abe Shinzo was shot on the street in Nara.
The day’s gloomy foreign news closes with scenes of conflict in Sudan.
Zai jian!
