The military vows to follow commander Xi's every command

An overview of Xi Jinping’s 2023 Happy New Year Speech:

Xi Jinping’s New Year’s message was full of opaque platitudes, banalities and aphorisms as expected, but the world in his words, essentially personally guided tour to his thinking, also gives hints of what to expect in the year to come. It was broadcast from a windowless wood-paneled bunker inside the gates of Zhongnanhai in an ersatz office lined with bookshelves and numerous photos of Xi himself. It was the top CCTV news story on New Year’s eve, New Year’s day and the day after that, and already CCTV is running quotes of leaders at home and abroad echoing the now “legendary” speech. 

Very much attuned to communist mythology, Xi prods the nation into action as though he were a seer dwelling in a magical cave at the old communist headquarters in Yanan, and he’s gotten the media, surnamed “Party”  to portray him that way. Folksy, down to earth, a man of the people. Nevermind that the first decade…
