Yesterday’s news report was unusual in the sense that it contained no visuals of China’s ubiquitous Chairman, nor visuals of China’s hegemonic nemesis, the US. But that’s not to say these two themes, the Scylla and Charybdis of news coverage, were not present in force and forceful in shaping the navigation of the news. Likewise today, when Chinese leader Xi meets and greets Gabonese President Ali Bongo Ondimba, the news is not really about Gabon. It’s about the need for Xi to show his own people, through the now-standard reception ritual at Tiananmen Square that he is the paramount boss bar none, while the content of diplomatic talks about helping African countries to remain “independent” and maintain food security are in actuality two slaps in the face of the US.
