"You are the first American friend I have met in Beijing this year” Xi tells Bill Gates.

The two “friends” met in a cozy villa inside the Diaoyutai state guest house.

"You are someone who has done a lot of good things in your participation in China’s development work, and you are our old friend."

Gates was said to have said he was “honoured to have this chance to meet” according to the state media readout.

“It's very exciting to be back," Gates added.

Note: China has taken control of the Gates meeting narrative. As Reuters pointed out, the newsworthy report that Xi invited Gates to share AI technology with China cannot be confirmed because it was not included in the Chinese state media readout. There was apparently also discussion about Microsoft business in China but that has been kept under wraps.
