It’s ironic, and perhaps intentional, that on this sensitive historic date, all Xi can talk about is his command of history and the wonders of Chinese culture. The above picture of the Forbidden City and the lakeside environs of Zhongnanhai are as close as today’s news is going to get to address the Tiananmen question, which is to say, not at all. What question? As an august historian, Xi understands there’s nothing to talk about if nothing worth talking about happened.
After revisiting Xi’s museum and archives tour, which featured prominently in yesterday’s news, CCTV solicits some of the best minds in China on history and archival matters to sing praise of Xi. Some of them are brilliant professors, deans and researchers, but they answer like frightened schoolchildren when CCTV puts the microphone up to their mouth. The answers are rote, wooden-sounding and basically regurgitate the words of Xi, with extra bonus points for highlighting his unwavering, unrusting wisdom.
